Variants
Add house rules and variants to a board game
In DiceyTable, one game can hold several set-ups, called variants. A smaller board, an extra seat, a house rule or a scripted version can sit beside the original, and the room owner picks one in the lobby before the game starts.
Open your game in the editor and add a variant from Variants in the Mod menu. Switch to it in the top bar, set Changes apply to this variant, and change only what differs. Each variant stores just its differences, so models, art and script files stay shared.
Go uses this for its 19x19, 13x13 and 9x9 boards. Chess and Othello offer an Unscripted variant you play by hand and a Scripted one where the game enforces the rules. A game with no variants stays exactly as it was.
What is DiceyTable?
DiceyTable is a free 3D virtual tabletop with a game editor built in. Game makers build a game once, offer it in several set-ups, and let each table choose the one it wants to play, all in the browser.
Only the room owner picks the variant, and it locks once the game starts. Setup options are one list for the whole game, so a variant cannot have options of its own.
Add a variant to your game
Open your project in the editor, add a variant and change only what differs. Building and publishing are free.
